Project "ME": A New Approach to Media in the Education of Learning Disabled Children

An innovative way of using audio-visual programs to help in the education of preschool children and older children with learning disabilities is described. Traditional audio-visual methods usually demand that the child sit still, remain quiet, and look and listen. These demands are too stringent for these young children to meet successfully; so, in the past, media has not been effectively used in early childhood education. Project "ME" has designed a system which enables children to interact, with a life-sized projected image, motorically, tactically, and verbally. Opportunities for visual-perceptual-motor training are expanded and programs have been designed to promote emotional awareness and enhance self-concept. An evaluation of two of the interactive programs is presented.
