An Investigation of Intelligence as a Causal Factor in Reading ProblemsDenver, Colorado To investigate the effect of intelligence on the level of reading achievement of elementary school children with significant reading problems, 100 consecutive referrals to the psychology department of the Kennedy Memorial Hospital were evaluated psychometrically. The statistical procedures used indicated a lack of significant effect of intelligence on level of reading retardation within this sample of children. The study suggests that factors other than WISC Full Scale intelligence must play a significant role in reading problems.
