Bases of Classification of Reading disorders

Gaston E. Blom, M.D.

Denver, Colorado

Arlene Whiteman Jones, M.A.

Claremont, California

This article reviews a large number of reference on the classification of dyslexia and related reading discorder. These have been grouped according to four categorids: (1) functional methods, (2) ettiologic inethods, (3) theroretical model methods, and (4) nosological system methods, Illustrative examples of each method are presented. The authors evaluate the difficulties and problems in te use of classification schemes. They advocate a descriptive behavioral method of classificiation as the most salient in view of its greater relevance to educators and school personnel. A typology classification system is proposed for the future.
