The Written Composing Ability of Children with Learning Disabilities: A Review of the Literature From 1980 to 1990

Phyllis L. Newcomer

Phyllis L. Newcomer is professor of special education at Beaver College in Glenside, Pennsylvania. She has published numerous research articles investigating issues relevant to learning disabilities. She is the author of several books, including Understanding and Teaching Emotionally Disturbed Children, and the coauthor of a variety of standardized tests used in the assessment of learning disabilities.

Edna M. Barenbaum

Edna M. Barenbaum is associate professor of special education at Cabrini College in Radnor, Pennsylvania. She has published numerous research articles investigating issues relevant to writing. Address: Phyllis L. Newcomer, Beaver College, Easton Road, Glenside, PA 19038.

This article reviews the literature pertaining to the written composing ability of students with learning disabilities that was published primarily in the decade from 1980 to 1990. The papers included are either reports of research or discussions of instructional procedures that are based on research. The topics addressed include story composition, expository writing, training/intervention research, and rationales/procedures for instruction.
