Neuropsychiatry Evaluation and Treatment of Children with Head Injury

Tona L. McGuire is a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Carrie E. Sylvester

Carrie E. Sylvester is an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and adjunct assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington. She received her MD and MPH from the University of Washington and is board-certified in pediatrics and psychiatry.

As the survival rate of children and adolescents who have experienced head injuries has improved, attention has turned to outcome, including cognitive, social, and psychiatric problems. This article focuses on the evaluation and management of neuropsychiatric sequelae of severe head injuries occurring in childhood and adolescence. Medical management and psychotherapeutic interventions are discussed in the contexts of hospitalization and long-term follow-up at home and in the community.
