Sociometric Status and After-School Social Activity of Children with Learning Disabilities

Carollee Howes

Carollee Howes received her PhD from Boston University. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Developmental Studies in Education at the Graduate School of Education, UCLA.

The relationship between sociometric status in school and participation in after-school activities was examined in a sample of 28 elementary-school age boys with learning disabilities. A sociometric questionnaire measured both popularity and acceptance in school. A 21-item parent questionnaire measured after-school activity. Both popularity and acceptance in school were related to getting together informally with friends. Popularity, though, was not related to participating in structured programs, while acceptance was inversely related.
