Basic Responsibility Training and the LD Student

Wanting What you Get and Getting What you Want

Phyllis M. Boden

Phyllis M. Boden is an LD resource teacher in St. Charles, Illinois. she received her ME in special education from East Texas State University. Address: 7N164 Hickory Lane, Elgin, IL 60120.

Despite years of intensive service, some junior and senior high LD students, who have not yet assumed basic responsibility for themselves, still have great difficulty processing and using auditory information, as well as following both auditory and written directions, resulting in failure which reinforces their opinion that they cannot be in control. Through observation while teaching this type of student, it is apparent that they need instruction in the process of formulating and altering plans to get what they want in life and also to want what they get to enable them to assume basic responsibility for themselves.
