Preschool Screening as a Means of Predicting Later Reading Achievement

Geraldine T. Lindquist, EdD

Geraldine T. Lindquist is a lecturer in elementary education at Weber State College in Ogden. Utah. Formerly she was a second-grade and kindergarten teacher. She received her EdD degree in curriculum development and supervision from Utah State University. Address: Dr. Geraldine Lindquist, 646 East 2850 North. North Ogden, UT 84404.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the Weber district screening program predicted the reading scores of primary grade students. The data showed a statistical significance at the .001 level; however, the relationship was not strong enough to provide accurate identification of individual children at risk of educational failure. It was concluded that the screening program has very limited value in identifying children with learning problems.
