Learning How To Be a Student When You Have a Learning Disability

Maxine Towle, PhD

Maxine Towle is the director of Pupil Personnel Services for Mukwonago Area Schools. Prior to public school administration, she was a trainer of learning disability teachers for seven years. Her publications have focused on instructional techniques and parent-school relations. Teaching study skills takes special techniques. This article analyzes the stages of study in terrms of skills neded at each phase. Specific ways to modify instructional activities and to develop study procedurs are presented. For the teacher who accepts the challenging responsibility of hlping learners become students, this article tells both what to teach and how to teach it.
